HMM is investing in a major modernisation programme at Washington United Terminals in Tacoma Harbor, increasing the facility’s annual container capacity by nearly 50%. The project will raise the terminal’s cargo-handling capacity from approximately 590,000 TEUs to 880,000 TEUs per year. It will also improve cargo flows and prepare the facility to handle larger container ships. The investment strengthens HMM’s long-term presence at The Northwest Seaport Alliance gateway, which combines the ports of Seattle and Tacoma. Terminal capacity to rise by nearly 50% Washington United Terminals serves as an important trans-Pacific gateway and forms a key part of HMM’s North American network. The modernisation programme will introduce new cargo-handling equipment to increase productivity and improve operating efficiency. The project includes the replacement of two ageing ship-to-shore cranes. It will also add two rubber-tyred gantry cranes as part of the wider terminal upgrade. The new equipment is expected to be delivered and commissioned by 2028. “As ports across North America compete for cargo and vessel calls, investments like this demonstrate confidence in the Seattle-Tacoma gateway,” said Dick Marzano, Co-Chair of The Northwest Seaport Alliance and President of the Port of Tacoma Commission. Marzano added that the project would support larger vessels, future cargo growth and reliable services for customers.
