The Shanghai Container Port has moved more than 200,000 TEUs in a single day for the first time, three weeks after Typhoon Bavi shut down its berths. Shanghai International Port (Group) said its terminals cleared 203,881 TEUs on 1 August, beating a previous single-day high of 187,312 TEUs by close to 9%. Typhoon Bavi stopped ships working at Shanghai port for around four days in mid-July, as trunk and feeder vessels waited offshore until the weather cleared and the port reopened. The vessels arrived at Shanghai port together once Typhoon Bavi passed, leaving too few berths free and the yards stacked with containers. The port group said on its official WeChat account that the container pile-up at Shanghai port slowed the clearing of ships and movement of the containers out of the yards. Part of the 1st August record is cargo that should have moved during the four-day shutdown, and the operator did not mention the total backlog. Shanghai port handled around 172,000 TEUs a day while its terminals worked through the backlog. Zhao Nan, an expert at the Shanghai International Shipping Research Centre, said the record showed how quickly Chinese ports get back to normal after a shutdown. Zhao said Shanghai port bounced back because its scheduled berths and yard moves together, and its terminals run on automated systems. Shanghai port topped 55.06 million TEUs in 2025, ahead of every other container port in the world, and has led the global rankings for 16 years in a row, according to Xinhua News Agency. The Shanghai 15th Five-Year Plan wants the port to pass 58 million TEUs a year by 2030 and to lead the ports of the Yangtze River Delta. The five-year plan does not say how many berths Shanghai will add or how much it will spend to hit that target, and no timeline has been published.
